This is the course for you if you are interested in science with a particular interest in biological or medical science. The course provides an exemplary experience of laboratory practical work with specialist equipment and techniques. The course delivers foundation knowledge in addition to equipping students with the employability skills and industry knowledge necessary to succeed when working in science. This course can also be used in preparation for a top-up to a full BSc.
Biotechnical Sciences encompasses a wide range of laboratory procedures for working with living organisms for human purposes. It includes research and development in the laboratory exploring, extracting, exploiting and producing high value-added products from living organisms. Examples include the use of organisms for the manufacture of drugs, beer and milk products or bioleaching in the mining industry. Biotechnology is also used to recycle, treat waste, clean-up sites contaminated by industrial activities (bioremediation), and also to produce biological weapons. Skills you will learn include those for working in a Microbiology laboratory, genetic engineering to modify organisms including gene therapy, physiological measurement and those involved in the discovery and development of new drugs and medical treatments.
It is a two-year programme requiring just two full days a week in leading to the award of an FD.
The programme offers informed teaching in small groups by highly qualified and experienced teachers in addition to excellent support. The programme has been developed with direct input from local employers who also have a global presence and represents an excellent opportunity for those interested in working in science and to those who already work in the science industry who wish to develop their careers by gaining a fit for purpose qualification whilst still working or honouring other commitments. The course provides a strong foundation in both biology and chemistry with specialisation in current areas of importance to a broad range of employers and research interests.
