The BEng program in Civil Engineering and Construction Management (CECM) aims at producing graduates capable of successfully pursuing a career (as Incorporated Engineers) across the different disciplines of Civil Engineering and the Built Environment. Although the program provides students a good understanding of the theory underlying the various disciplines associated with civil engineering emphasis is focused on application and the development of more practical skills associated with construction processes, management and site supervision. The proposed programme enables students to achieve a comprehensive and sound understanding of civil engineering, infrastructure projects and the relevant technologies and processes which will enable graduates to develop more efficiently the necessary skills and abilities required for effectively managing and supervising the related production and site processes.
Initially, in year 1, students are introduced to various aspects of civil engineering including the roles and relationships of the relevant construction related professions. They are also introduced to certain fundamental concepts associated with the underlying theory, health and safety, sustainability and engineering design. During years 2 and 3 apprentices are introduced to a range of topics which cover all the disciplines of Civil Engineering (structures, materials, hydraulics, hydrology, geotechnics, environmental and transportation engineering). Understanding and application is supported by the development and application of critical thinking and problem solving skills.
During the later years of program (years 3 and 4) the courses offered specialise more on design and management. The latter courses in combination with the year 4 dissertation project require students to develop and apply practical skills; communication, leadership and team skills; lifelong learning; information management; and, scientific methods, critical thinking and problem solving skills. Courses which lead to the final year dissertation are also essential for the development of social skills, responsibilities, ethics, professionalism, entrepreneurship, and, managerial skills.
