The Foundation Degree (FD) in Computer Systems, Design and Solutions aims to enable students to develop a successful career in Information Technology and related fields, engaging professionally with common challenges such as the specification, design, deployment and management of complex IT and computer systems.
The course comprises a wide range of modules to give you a comprehensive knowledge of the subject. It will provide the fundamental skills and knowledge in computing for a commercial environment and has been designed to ensure it meets the needs of local IT employers and those of the wider business community. The course aims to produce computer professionals with a range of relevant skills for web or multimedia developers, programmers, systems analysts, or network or database administrators. The emphasis is on end-user satisfaction and using professional practice to produce industry standard software, techniques and interfaces. A broad range of issues and skills are studied to the depth required at degree level. In the first year you will study a range of core topics including: systems analysis design and database implementation, computer technologies (desktop and server hardware, networking and Arduino), dynamic web development (HTML, CSS and PHP), programming fundamentals (C#) and discrete maths for problem solving, as well as working on your personal development skills. Year two broadens out with a range of specialist subjects including: project management (PRINCE2), OO programming (Java), database design (MySQL), network administration (MS Active Directory) and multimedia technologies (Adobe). You will also begin to undertake your own professional development, preparing you for graduating; you’ll be automatically enrolled as a student member of the British Computer Society (BCS) as part of this module, providing valuable networking and career support opportunities.
Most students who complete the Foundation Degree progress to a top-up BSC (Hons) degree, which typically takes an additional year for full-time students and two years for part-time. You can also progress to Computer Science BSc at York St John University. Many of our computing students have gone on to further study and have attained industry standard qualifications such as the Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) qualifications.
