In recent years the way we view photography has changed significantly. The opportunities provided by advances to create and communicate with imagery has never been more exciting, diverse, challenging and accessible. The Foundation Degree in Contemporary Photography Practice recognises the fundamental changes in the industry and will provide students with the technical skills required. Students will gain a greater understanding of theoretical aspects together with improved creativity and elements important in professional practice in the ever changing and evolving industry of contemporary photographic practices.
The course covers a wide ranging curriculum examining the techniques and technology employed in location, fashion studio, portraiture, landscape and client-led photography. Students will be encouraged to experiment with different types of photography allowing them to explore graphics, book design, exhibiting, installation and film-making. Work-based learning is a core element of the course and fundamental to the eventual employability of graduates. Students will either work with a professional company or practitioner related to the sector or work as a member of a photo-agency set up and run by the students themselves.
The research modules will provide an underpinning knowledge of how visual communication is used and consumed. Through greater understanding the students will attain an appreciation of the opportunities, changes and challenges they face when considering a career in the creative arts. The course will allow students to develop an array of academic, practical and interpersonal skills.
