Crime is a social and political issue with huge impact, causing untold misery for both victim and perpetrator. This degree is for those who want to understand and tackle this problem, whether on a global, national or individual level. During this course you will focus on practical work through real life case studies and holding situational classes in court rooms, custody suites and police stations, whilst experience realistic simulated environments such as mock prison, police cell, crime scenes and a moot court room.
You will focus on psychological profiling and psychosocial pathologies, exploring how to predict criminal behaviour. Perform your own research through work placements within the criminal justice system, understanding how to reduce crime and better deal with its aftermath. Work with many partner agencies including Devon and Cornwall Police, Citizen’s Advice Bureau, Derriford Hospital Emergency Department, Victim Support, Keir Housing, Youth Justice Board, Court Service Plymouth and Davenport Community Safety Programme. There are study abroad and International criminal justice research placement options available on this course.
After completing this course you could apply to graduate schemes with the police, civil service or prison service. You could work to prevent crime or with families who have been victims of crime, work as a social worker, youth worker, probation officer, police officer or community development officer.
