From your own creative work to literary criticism, the BA (Hons) English course gives you the chance to explore all aspects of literature, including its global impact and essential role in challenging ways of thinking. At the same time as gaining an understanding of critical theory, you will fine-tune your personal creative writing skills. The development of transferable analytical and communication skills is also key. Study in a location which has been the muse of writers for centuries and remains at the leading edge of creativity today.Travel opportunities include the chance to study abroad for a semester (usually in the USA), and a residential writers’ retreat each year to Boscastle.
Second year placement in industry, could include online teaching; copywriting; placements in schools; event management; theatre review writing, and magazine publishing.
Our visiting writers will give you insight into your own work, and have recently included Lucy Christopher, Matt Harvey, Christopher Nicholson, Blake Morrison, Harry Parker and Philip Marsden. Study options include the short story and the novel, screenplay, stage-play (and the chance to see your writing in performance), children’s writing, memoir, poetry, blog-writing, copy-writing, gothic and sci-fi, travel-writing, nature writing and written journalism. Strong student writing is published each year in Ellipses – our creative writing journal. Choose your preferred focus across a variety of texts and styles, whether that be creative writing or literary criticism. The ability to write and communicate well will help you to stand out in any future role. Past students have secured work in various writing roles; for new media, publishing, in the creative industries, communication, or technical industries. Graduates may also move into further postgraduate study, whether for further research or to train as a teacher.
