This variant of the English & American Literature degree allows students to explore, in addition to topics from those traditions, the literature resulting from the colonial encounters between England and such diverse areas as Africa, India, Australia, the Caribbean and Ireland. By studying History and English, you gain a truly global perspective on each subject. Our English programmes cover traditional areas (such as Shakespeare or Dickens) and also allow you to examine American literature, for a broader perspective on English-language literature. You are also given the opportunity to explore creative writing and recent developments in literary theory. Within History you examine a wide range of sources and study varied historical opinion on subjects spanning different periods and regions – with areas of expertise including English and American History. Both subjects follow a modular structure allowing students to tailor their studies to their own interests.
