If you are interested in analysing a range of literary texts from various contexts and historical periods alongside exploring the complex relationships between literature, politics and history then this is the degree for you. Our English Literature and Medieval Studies degree programme offers you the opportunity to:
• Cover English Literature themes from the early-Medieval period to the present day, while also developing your knowledge of critical theory and the diversity of approaches to literature.
• Learn about Anglo-Saxon literature, or the poetry of Chaucer; you can study the troubled reign of King John, or the Cathar heretics of Southern France; you can discover how English, Welsh and French identity were forged in wars and rivalries during the Middle Ages.
• Study optional modules in Creative Writing.
• Study optional modules in Gender and Culture with specialist researchers and lecturers.
Swansea is the birthplace of Dylan Thomas, widely regarded by many literary scholars as one of the Twentieth Century's most influential lyrical poets, and amongst the finest as such of all time.
97% of our graduates are employed within six months of graduating according to the latest DLHE 2015 figures. Our Employability Officer supports our students with information and advice which is backed up by the University’s Careers Service and Work Placement Team. All students have access to events, workshops and employer talks, including an annual conference for students in June to support final year students with the transition into the world of work.
With this degree programme you have the option to study abroad for a semester as part of your degree. You can either choose to go East and study in Hong Kong, China or Singapore or West and study in North America or Canada. This Semester Abroad opportunity costs no additional tuition fees; this means that you have the chance to study at an overseas institution without having to pay any further fee on top of the tuition fee you are already paying. You will, however, have to pay for your flight costs, accommodation, living expenses and any additional expenditure.
