The English major combines the broad historical coverage of traditional English degrees with distinctive features reflecting the College’s liberal arts tradition. These include the study of rhetoric, the study of stylistics, and comparison between literatures in English, literatures in different languages, different art forms, and between literary criticism and cognate disciplines. Philosophy complements the English Major by providing students with analytical tools and conceptual frameworks that enrich their interpretations of literary texts. It shares with English an emphasis on clarity, nuance, and precision of expression.
