These courses examine the natural environment and human impact upon it. The courses produce science graduates with an interdisciplinary understanding of the complexity and uncertainty of environmental systems, and who have the skills and competencies to observe, measure, model and manage these systems. This is achieved through the integration of theoretical, practical and field-based approaches. Interdisciplinary in nature, the courses embrace ecology, geography, glaciology, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, geology, pedology and environmental chemistry, and consider present-day environmental problems such as climate change, natural hazards, environmental degradation, conservation, planning, recreation, tourism provision, and international development. This course provides the opportunity to complete a work placement or period of study abroad to enhance your employability and give you the skills and confidence to stand out in today's competitive marketplace, this takes place in year three and will extend your degree to four years in total. You can also gain official recognition for your placement and be awarded a further qualification in addition to your degree. Placement options are: • A Diploma in Professional Practice (DPP) is awarded if you successfully complete a placement year in employment, in addition to an academic assessment or project. • A Diploma in Professional Practice (International) (DPP(I)) is awarded if your work placement is successfully completed overseas. An academic assessment or project is usually involved. • A Diploma in International Academic Studies (DIAS) is awarded if you successfully complete a year studying abroad. This usually takes place in year three of your degree programme.
