By taking a European studies degree at Essex, you will be taught by leading experts and researchers to understand the nature of contemporary Europe from an economic, political and sociological perspective. You also explore Europe’s history and diverse traditions, as well as the artists, writers, philosophers, musicians, composers and filmmakers whose influences still dominate the world around us. You acquire the knowledge to make an active contribution to one of the most important political and cultural processes of our time and, by learning European languages (if your course includes language study) and studying abroad at a European university, you gain skills and experience that set you apart from other graduates. European studies at Essex gives you the freedom to tailor the course to your interests and allows you to choose the options that will be most useful to your future career. You can select from modules in art history, economics, film, history, literature, philosophy, politics and sociology, as well as a variety of European languages. Depending on what modules you have taken in the first year, you also have an opportunity to change from one European studies course to another at the end of your first year. This multidisciplinary approach encourages you to work and think across traditional subject boundaries. This not only gives you the knowledge and the skills to understand contemporary European politics and society from different perspectives, but also the confidence and flexibility to apply yourself successfully to whatever professional field you choose to enter. Language skills are particularly advantageous in today’s graduate job market. With our European studies courses you can choose to study Portuguese, French, German, Italian and Spanish, and in the case of the last three, you can start learning these languages from scratch.
