This BSc (Hons) Forensic Criminology degree is designed for students who are interested in the big questions of crime and want to apply their scientific mind to the investigation and solving of crime. The degree readies students to apply science (biology, chemistry and physics) to crime scene investigation. You will understand how forensic science is employed within the criminal justice system and learn how to control, preserve, record and recover evidence from a crime scene or other incident. You will learn how to ask the questions relevant to investigating a crime, how to examine CCTV footage and photographs and how to produce and present evidence in court.
You will merge the study of crime from a social perspective with the science of gathering and testing physical evidence. Perform your own research and work placements within criminology focused organisations, whilst working on real “cold” cases and experience classes held in court rooms, custody suites and police stations.
On campus facilities designed to get you used to your future career, including biochemistry labs and simulated environments such as a mock prison, police cell and crime scene house. You will take part in two site criminological visits per year and will work with forensic teams abroad.There will be opportunities to take part in a research placement abroad. Work with many partner agencies including Devon and Cornwall Police, Citizen’s Advice Bureau, Derriford Hospital Emergency Department, Victim Support, Keir Housing, Youth Justice Board, Court Service Plymouth and Davenport Community Safety Programme.
Career options include police forces, government departments, armed forces, defence services, public health laboratories, university research departments, coroner or mortician and working for companies that deal with specialised areas, such as fire investigation or insurance fraud.
