This programme will enable you to study a major European language as well as the literature, artistic developments and theories associated with it. Through intense training in the target language you will acquire near-native fluency. Beyond the intensive study of the French language, you will explore the exciting contribution of French speakers to world culture. French political and philosophical ideas have played a central role in creating our modern civilisation. As a large subject area, the French department at Edinburgh can offer you a wide range of courses spanning the Middle Ages to the 21st century, including specialist options in literature, film and politics taught by leading specialists in their field. We offer a range of topics for study including literature, film, post-colonial studies, gender studies, and word and music, among others. These are taught by world recognised researchers and enable you to get an overview of France and Francophone culture, politics, and social movements throughout its history. From Year 2 onwards, you will be able to choose option courses linked to your subject to complement the compulsory courses. The programme also includes a year abroad, during which you may choose to study in one of our partner institutions, work as a language tutor on British Council placements or find your own internships. We also offer a variety of extracurricular activities such as French Theatre Company and benefit from the close proximity of the National Library of Scotland and The French Institute and the many cultural opportunities offered in Edinburgh.
