The study of German at Edinburgh covers not only the language, but also a broad range of literary and cultural topics. These include film, theatre, translation, politics and gender, Germany and Islam, East German studies, Brecht, the Third Reich and the Holocaust, German Romanticism, Goethe and Schiller, and medieval studies. The oral language practicals cover a wide range of stimulating up-to-date cultural and political topics. As the most economically and politically influential country of the European Union, Germany has been frequently studied from a political science perspective. Studying German and politics you will gain an advantage here through intensive study of the language and culture, allowing you to understand the way German-speakers interpret the world through their language and within their specific historical context. Courses will deal with subjects of interest to politics students, such as the legacy of the Holocaust, migration and minority cultures.
