COURSE OF Indonesian and Linguistics
SOAS University of London (Camden)
University: http://www.soas.ac.uk/
SOAS is the only university in the UK to offer a comprehensive range of modules in the language, literatures and cultures of Indonesia. As well as offering a range of language modules from beginners level to advanced, the department also offers modules on the literature and film of Indonesia which provide a penetrating view of life and thought in Indonesia. Students are further encouraged to learn to read texts in Malay from pre-modern Indonesia and Malaysia, written in Jawi script. As well as specific modules on Indonesia, students will take some regional modules, in order to place Indonesia with the wider Southeast Asian context. The linguistics component of the combined subject degree is designed to develop a comprehensive understanding of the way that languages are universally structured and trains students to master all the basic skills necessary for the analysis of different sound systems and semantics (the study of meaning in language). In addition, students may also take modules dealing with language and social communication (focusing on the interaction of language and social groups), morphology (the structure of words), historical linguistics (the historical development of languages), phonetics and the structure of an African or Asian language.
