This foundation degree covers teaching and learning in a range of educational contexts. You’ll study the psychological, social, political and ethical factors which affect children and young people’s educational experiences. Your study sessions will offer a unique insight into many aspects of learning and teaching, and encourage critical analysis of current best practice while enabling you to develop your own approaches. Specialist subjects will include child development, safeguarding, welfare policy, and how to support children with dyslexia or a diagnosis of autism. This Foundation degree is designed for people working or volunteering in educational settings for at least 10 hours per week who wish to further develop their skills, knowledge and career prospects. You can combine study with work-based learning, meaning you can focus on professional development in the context of your current job. As part of the course, you’ll need to be working or volunteering with children or young people in an educational or Early Years setting. Throughout your studies, your knowledge and understanding of the work you do will grow, as you explore new perspectives on learning and development 0-18 years. Work-based learning will make up a quarter of your qualification, giving you ample opportunity to put new ideas into practice with the support of your employer and course leaders. Following completion of your Foundation degree, you’ll be able to apply for a progression year to gain your Honours degree. After gaining Honours, routes into Qualified Teacher Status or Early Years teacher status are open to you.
