This course has been developed to offer a balance of academic and industrial knowledge to meet the needs of key employers within the North East region along with national and international businesses. This course aims to help you develop a range of skills, contributing to the region's competitiveness and to close the skills gap of future engineers both nationally and internationally. The first year of this degree provides you with a multi-disciplinary theoretical, simulation and practical experience focusing on engineering mathematics, 2-D CAD and drawing systems, electrical science, mechanical science and mechatronics, along with practical hand-on manufacturing experience of using machine tools and fabrication. The second year of study will build upon previous knowledge and experience and project management, 3D computer aided design, advanced mechanical science, mechanical power transmission and engineering design. In your third year of study you explore engineering principles in a range of applied mechanical applications, manufacturing systems and processes, modelling and analysis and product development. The third year of the course will also consider practical experience including destructive and non-destructive testing, finite element analysis and fracture mechanics. This course is mapped against the academic requirements of the Engineering Council UK-Spec for Incorporated Engineer (IENG) status and students are encouraged to join the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) as student affiliated member. Student membership of the IMechE is free of charge for the duration of the course and provides additional benefits such as specialist lectures, visits and access to a wide range of journal article, publications and an online engineering handbook. As part of our work-ready guarantee you will be given the opportunity to work towards EngTech or IEng professional status with the Engineering Council, through a regulatory body. To further develop your work-ready skills you will be given the opportunity to visit various engineering companies throughout your studies and you will undertake a series of industrial training courses to gain vital first-hand experience of how engineering theory is put into practice. A degree in mechanical manufacturing engineering opens many industry doors and you can choose from varied career options in wide range of industries, such as design, manufacturing, military services, aerospace, automotive, rail, control, renewables energy, subsea applications and specialist measurement techniques. The majority of our graduates progress to work for an engineering company or continue in higher education and go on to study MEng or MSc qualifications. Our students work in diverse engineering companies like the NHS, Drager Safety, Gates Power, Rolls Royce, The Reece Group, Spincraft, Quick Hydraulics, Transmission Dynamics and many more. Academic progression is available via an appropriate Masters degree.
