Explore the breadth of creative media practice while learning about the French language, culture, and literature and spending a year working or studying in France in this joint BA programme.
Studying French and Media with a Year Abroad, you will learn about radio and video production, digital and social media, journalism, public relations, and marketing, while receiving intensive French language tuition and studying important aspects of society and politics in the French-speaking world.
Our Media programme is ranked in the top 10 in the UK for overall student satisfaction (NSS 2017, NSS 2018) and 11th in the UK according to the Guardian University Guide 2018.
Some 91% of our graduates are employed or in further study within six months of graduating (Destination of Leavers from HE survey 2015) and 75% of our students achieved a 1st class or 2.1 honours degree in 2017/18.
Our French and Media graduates are truly international and are employed not just in the UK but all around the world, pursuing careers in journalism, media, business, public relations and marketing, digital marketing, broadcasting, TV and radio, and publishing.
Based on our stunning Singleton Park campus, in parkland overlooking Swansea Bay on the edge of the Gower Peninsula, this four-year course offers a flexible degree structure with a wide range of specialist modules that allow you to tailor your studies to your future career goals while developing your individual interests.
In Media, you will gain a thorough understanding of the history and theory of media and communication, media law, and film as well as practical skills and techniques relevant to a range of modern digital media fields.
You will have access to our Media Creativity Suite, which has video studio and a computer lab kitted out with iMacs installed with industry standard software, including Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Creative Cloud.
Your French studies will encompass the rich diversity of the French language, culture, film, literature, history, together with modules on translation, interpreting, and language teaching.
Our computer labs are equipped with the latest versions of leading translation software tools and you will have access to an external virtual learning environment incorporating mobile apps and online videos to further enhance your independent study.
In addition to formal classes, you can develop your skills at weekly ‘language cafés’, which bring you together with exchange students who are native speakers ready to talk to you in the language you are studying.
You will spend your third year in France, where you will have the choice of studying at a university, teaching in a school or working in a business, enhancing your study and career prospects.
You will gain excellent oral and writing skills and learn to present your ideas in a range of formats. You will also develop strong research and analytical skills and the ability to problem solve and make informed decisions.
