Our five-year Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree course (BM5) is our standard direct entry programme for home/EU and international students who generally do not already have an undergraduate degree. An increasing number of graduate students are also applying and successfully completing this course. It is recognised by the General Medical Council (GMC) and, following graduation, allows you to provisionally register with the GMC and apply for Foundation Training posts which on completion will lead to you gaining full registration with the GMC. You will study a range of science and social sciences disciplines, giving you the knowledge, understanding and clinical practice that will underpin a huge variety of possible medical careers including a physician, surgeon, general practitioner or clinical scientist. Our stimulating, open and supportive environment will prepare you for becoming a competent practitioner in a modern, changing health service, with the capability to follow your chosen career in a range of healthcare settings including the NHS. World-leading academics inform our research-led education programme that will help you develop the skills, professional attitudes and behaviours that you will need as a newly qualified doctor, scholar, professional and practitioner. Clinical contact with patients gets underway from the start of your course, and over the five years you will gain insight and experience of working with a variety of health professional teams, both in the community and across the NHS. You will undertake a research project in year three, leading to a final award of a BMedSc (Honours) degree in addition to your BMBS primary medical qualification. You also have the opportunity to undertake an intercalated Masters degree here in Southampton, or a BSc or Masters degree elsewhere, after successful completion of year 3. Applicants will need to meet the minimum entry requirements as detailed on our website, and all applicants are required to take the UK Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT).
