Portuguese is one of the world's most important languages, spoken in Europe, South America, and Africa. Study at the University of Edinburgh encompasses learning about the fascinating literatures and cultures where Portuguese is spoken, as well as the language. This programme is designed to perfect your skills in the sixth most widely spoken language in the world and provide you with a deep knowledge of the cultures where it is spoken. Social policy is the study of welfare and wellbeing within societies and the policies which affect them. Primarily the focus is on important social and economic changes, what causes them, and their consequences for society. Topics include social security, health, education, housing, personal social services, the criminal justice system and the labour market. International culture flourishes at the University of Edinburgh, with a thriving Centre for Contemporary Latin American Studies, an annual Spanish film festival, an annual student-led Spanish play, and an annual Portuguese translation workshop, supported by the Instituto Camões Portuguese Language Centre.
