If you’re interested in becoming a primary teacher, this course is a first step towards your goal. It will not give you Qualified Teacher Status, but this means it gives you plenty of time to understand and research broad background issues in education, and to gain practical experience in classrooms. This may suit you if you want to spend time experimenting with new ideas and approaches in order to find your own teaching style and preferences, without being assessed. You don’t need to pass QTS skills tests prior to starting this course. Following the course, many students go on to further study to qualify as a teacher, through routes such as PGCE or School Direct.
The course delivers a broad-based understanding of educational policy and practice theory. You will develop your own philosophy of education through a blend of academic study and practical experience. Many students go on to a primary teaching qualification through School Direct or PGCE, and this course fully prepares you for those routes, including helping you to review what type of teaching you might most enjoy. Other opportunities include Early Years education, community education, youth work, children’s workforce professionals, educational management, welfare and administration, library and information management professionals, language analysts, the media and publishing – both in this country and internationally.
